Global Village

Students interested in Global Village should apply for Global Mosaic [1], a new living-learning community for fall 2013, on their housing application.

What is the Global Village?

The Global Village, located in Mayflower Residence Hall, is a unique living/learning community (LLC) for both international and U.S. students interested in foreign cultures, languages, and international issues. It is a new LLC that combines the International Crossroads Community (one of the oldest LLC’s on campus) and the Hispanic Language and Cultures LLC. The community is multilingual and multicultural; it is coed, and it is open to students of different majors, language abilities, international interests, ages, and experiences. Residents have the opportunity to participate in cultural festivals, language dinners, and programs where they learn about the intricacies of living in a diverse world.

Required Coursework

Students take a course in common with their fellow Global Village mates. There are two courses available. “Music, Food, and Salsa: Exploring Latino Culture” explores the diverse Latino culture in Iowa City. “Cool Places and Hot Spots” explores world cultures and important global issues. Both courses are one semester hour.

Why live in the Global Village?

As a Global Village member you will build close friendships with other students who share the common goal of broadening their knowledge of global issues, languages and cultures. You will also plan fun international programs, activities and events with other community members throughout the year.

Praise from Students:

“The Global Village is a great way to get acquainted with people from all over the globe as well as other people with similar interests. It was easily the best decision I have made during my first year at Iowa because it not only introduced me to amazing people I may have not have met otherwise, it also compelled me to expand my horizons and become more involved. I’ve learned a lot about the cultures of others and in doing so learned quite a bit about my own. The friendships I have forged within the community will certainly endure beyond my time in the Global Village.” -- Curtis Goos, Treynor, Iowa

“It is an amazing place to meet new people and new cultures. I think it provides one of the best places to get in contact with different cultures because of the things that are being organized especially for international students.” -- Sander, The Netherlands

“I enjoyed living there and I like the University of Iowa. I would probably stay for a longer time if I am not graduating. I really like living on the international floor, as I said, I really liked it and I would stay longer if I have a chance.”-- Magnus, Iceland

“It has many friendly people and it is a good place for exchange students to live. The events are great and I really liked it. It is a really nice place.” -- Hogki, Korea

“The floor has an environment that is unlike any other floor in the residence halls. The students not only develop friendships that span across the globe, they gain an insight into other cultures and customs while sharing their own. This is a distinctly unique type of education and interaction that cannot be duplicated in any classroom.” --Mike, Former RA, Des Moines

“I enjoy living on the floor. It brings diversity into real life. This is an extraordinary place where all the cultures mix together and become a big family. So you get a taste of different aspects of every culture. Being a programmer also gives me the chance to plan events and involve in different activities. This is a great place for both international and domestic students!” --Brian, Former programmer, Taiwan
