Study Scholarship

DAAD Study Scholarships [1] are awarded to highly qualified graduating seniors and graduate students of all disciplines to provide the opportunity to study in Germany, or complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree course and obtain a degree from a German higher education institution.

Research Grant

DAAD Research Grants [2] are awarded primarily to highly qualified PhD candidates who are early in their academic/professional careers or to individuals wishing to earn a doctoral degree in Germany. Funding may also be granted to recent PhDs who would like to conduct research. Students may also apply for short-term research grants (1-6 months) in the spring. Next year's spring campus deadline is May 1, 2013.

Application Process

To apply for the graduate DAAD Study Scholarship or Research Grant, complete applications must be submitted to Karen Wachsmuth, International Programs, 1111 University Capitol Centre [4] by October 15, 2012.  (Note: Applicants for Study Scholarships for Artists and Musicians will apply directly through the DAAD New York office.)

Graduates

• Study Scholarship for Artists and Musicians [6]
  Study Scholarships for Fine Arts, Architecture, Music, Dance are awarded to highly qualified graduate students in these fields to provide the opportunity to study in Germany, or complete a postgraduate degree course and obtain a degree from a German higher education institution.
• University Summer Course Grant [7]
  This program provides scholarships to attend a broad range of 3- to 4-week summer language courses at German universities which focus mainly on literary, cultural, political and economic aspects of modern and contemporary Germany.
• RISE professional [8]
  RISE professional internship placements provide students the opportunity to live and work in an international context, to gain confidence in their practical and professional skills, and to improve their German.
• Intensive Language Courses in Germany [9]
  DAAD offers grants to graduate students at North American universities to attend 8-week intensive language courses at leading institutes in Germany.
• German Studies Research Grant [10]
  This specialized DAAD program offers up to five German Studies Research Grants to highly qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their department/ program chairs. The grant may be used for short-term research (one to two months) in either North America or Germany.
• International Lawyers [11]
  DAAD offers young lawyers from around the world the opportunity to gain unique insight into the structure and function of German law during an eight-month study visit to Germany.
• EMGIP Bundestag Internship [12]
  EMGIP (Émigré Memorial German Internship Program) offers internship opportunities for US and Canadian students in the German parliament, the Bundestag. The internships are two months long in positions matching the student’s interest and experience

PhD

• Intensive Language Courses in Germany [13]
  DAAD offers grants to graduate students at North American universities to attend 8-week intensive language courses at leading institutes in Germany.
• DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship [14]
  The program is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to the AICGS (The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies), which is located in Washington, DC, for stays of two months each.
• Leo Baeck Institute-DAAD Grant [15]
  Fellowships are awarded for research in New York or Germany on the social, communal, and intellectual history of German-speaking Jewry. Financial assistance is provided to doctoral students for dissertation research and to young academics for the preparation of a scholarly essay or book.
• DAAD-Leibniz Scholarship [16]
  This program is open to highly motivated and qualified graduates, PhD students and post-docs aiming to carry out research work at one of the participating Leibniz Institutes. Candidates should be aware of the research profile of possible host institutes. It is expected that the candidates rank among the top performers of their corresponding peer group.
• Helmholtz-DAAD Fellowship [17]
  Fellowships offer excellent young scientists and researchers from all around the world the opportunity to do research at a Helmholtz Centre in Germany. The Helmholtz Association works on solving the grand challenges which face society, science and industry and concentrates on researching systems of great complexity in the following six research fields: Earth and Environment, Energy, Health, Key Technologies, Structure of Matter, and Transport and Space.
