2010-2011 Statistics Full Report [1]

1347 University of Iowa students—908 undergraduates and 439 graduate and professional students—studied abroad during 2010-11.

Comparing the number of undergraduates who studied abroad to the number of bachelor's degrees awarded by the UI during 2010-11 (4537) indicates that approximately 20% of the current graduating class studied abroad.

Academic Status

Among the UI undergraduates, less than 1% were first-year students, 8% sophomores, 32% juniors, and 59% seniors.

Field of Study

Undergraduates who studied abroad during 2010-11 had 71 different majors, representing most majors in all the undergraduate colleges.

Destinations

UI undergraduates studied abroad in 58 different countries during 2010-11.

The highest concentration of undergraduates—58%—was in Western Europe.  18% in Asia, 10% studied in Latin America, 6% in Oceania (Australia & New Zealand), and 8% in all other regions combined.

Programs

73% of UI undergraduates who studied abroad participated in UI-sponsored study abroad programs; 27% participated in programs offered by other U.S. universities, exchange organizations, or foreign institutions.

Duration of Study

36% of UI undergraduates spent a summer abroad, 41% the semester, and 5% an entire academic year.  16% participated in winter session programs and 6% participated in other short-term programs of 3 weeks or less.

GPA

The average cumulative GPA of UI undergraduates who studied abroad was 3.28.  [The UI mean was 2.98 (fall 10) and 3.00 (spring 11).]  75% had an average of 3.00 or higher; 47% had an average of 3.33 or higher. 

Counties

Resident students who studied abroad in 2010-11 represented 79 of Iowa’s 99 counties.
