2008 Summer Institute for Teachers
June 16-20, 2008
**The 2008 Summer Institute has been CANCELED due to flooding in the area!**
“Global Climate Change: Human Rights Consequences & Responsibilities”
Each summer, an international theme or geographical area is examined. The 2008 Institute will be led by a group of affiliated staff, faculty, and students of the University of Iowa’s Center for Human Rights (UICHR), and coordinated by Amy Weismann (see page 3), Deputy Director of the University of Iowa’s Center for Human Rights, who will present Global Climate Change: Human Rights, Consequences and Responsibilities.
This workshop will provide information about the science of climate change, the impacts of climate change and current and future adaptation and mitigation strategies. Current political and legal debates about the causes of and responses to climate change will also be discussed, including climate change’s differential impacts on ecosystems and human populations around the world and the diverse ways people are already coping with climate change. Breakout sessions and lectures will examine the collection of legal instruments known as the “International Bill of Human Rights”, discuss human rights as a framework for addressing environmental concerns, and briefly explore new theories of “intergenerational” human rights to introduce the human rights issues arising from climate change. Iowa’s connection to climate change will be emphasized along with local responses.
This workshop is intended for junior high and high school teachers from across Iowa and to engage teachers of natural sciences, geography, global studies, social studies and related subjects in the teaching about climate change with the assistance of faculty and graduate students from the University of Iowa College of Education. The content of the workshop will include lectures providing overviews of content areas, and breakout and discussion sessions to explore case studies or specific thematic concerns within the content area, and will assist participants to identify effective approaches to integrating climate change, and more broadly, environmental education in their classrooms. Panels will communicate content from a variety of perspectives and/or concretize the overview of the thematic concerns explored in the lectures. There will also be field trips, optional film screenings and lectures, and other social events tied to the workshop.
