Registration Information

There are no fees for any of the workshops offered via this series. All workshops will take place in the International Commons, International Programs, 1117 University Capitol Centre (unless otherwise noted). Participants must register for all workshops in advance.  Confirmations will be sent via email for registrations received 6 days prior to each session.

Begining July 14, registration for each session will be available in UI Self Service:
1)  Go to UI Employee Self Service and click the “Personal” tab
2)  Go to Learning and Development, and click on “My Training”
3)  Click “Available Sessions and Series”
4)  Available sessions default to Alphabetical order-find the class you are interested in, click title, and “Enroll in Session”.

Participants who plan to earn a certificate must register for and attend the introductory course and at least four specialized courses of their choice. Questions regarding the certificate can be addressed to the OISS at: oiss@uiowa.edu or by calling (319)335-0335.

Introductory Workshop

REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Offered 1:00 to 4:00 PM, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH and repeated on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd.
The introductory workshop will start off by providing an overview of the international student and scholar population at the University of Iowa.  Participants will also have opportunities to discuss the special issues and concerns typically experienced by international students.

The J-1 Scholar: Philosophy, Policies and Procedures

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18th
The hosting of an exchange visitor scholar involves a partnership between the host department and the Office of International Students and Scholars. This program will provide information on how to determine when J-1 status is appropriate, responsibilities of the scholar, host department and OISS, forms and procedures to ensure the scholar is properly documented for immigration purposes, and orientation and other assistance that is provided by OISS. Participants will be given a general understanding of the J-1 exchange visitor program, relevant immigration regulations, and the common benefits and challenges associated with hosting a J-1 scholar.

Dragons, Doormats and Dynamite Staff

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th
The session will focus onwhy frontline staff play such an important rolein easing the cultural transitions many international students experience.  Through role plays and discussions participants will begin to assess their own work environments and styles, and how one can best meet the needs of the international community.

The International Exchange Experience

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7th
International exchange students, like University of Iowa students studying abroad, must hit the ground running as they adjust to a new culture, language, and academic environment. This workshop will explore the unique challenges and opportunities facing international exchange students at the University of Iowa. Workshop participants will learn how the exchange student experience differs from that of degree seeking international students. Additionally, participants will become familiar with basic immigration requirements for J-1 exchange students as well as services provided by the Office for Study Abroad and the Office of International Students and Scholars.

If You Program It, They Will Come!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22nd
What factors do you need to consider as you design and market programs, which include international students?  Come to this workshop and learn about what types of programs are being offered by OISS, and how you can further develop programs in your own departments that are welcoming for international students.

Cross-Cultural Conflict Prevention and Resolution

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 6th
This session will give you an opportunity to discover your culturally preferred approach or style of resolving conflict through the use of the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory developed by Dr. Mitchell Hammer. Once you are more aware of your own style, you will be able to adapt to the styles of others and work more effectively in intercultural settings.

The Why’s and How’s of International Student Recruiting

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18TH
This workshop will cover current recruiting activities and objectives, the typical information requested and questions asked by prospective international students, how US education and UI in particular are presented to international students and their families, and the resources developed by University offices involved in international student recruiting.  Faculty and staff who have professional contacts or overseas travel can use information from this session to provide answers and assistance to prospective students that they may meet.

Cross-Cultural Insights into Supervising and Being Supervised

WENESDAY, FEBRUARY 18TH
Bringing new internationals into your lab, workplace or teaching environment is a two way cross-cultural professional relationship.  This workshop will cover supervision styles with a focus on the following four domains: behavioral attitudes, perceived consequences, relevant social factors, and facilitating communication.

Employment Issues for International Students

TUESDAY, MARCH 3rd
This session will provide information on the immigration regulations that pertain to employment of students in F and J status. We will examine how these students qualify for on-campus employment, the circumstances in which they may qualify for off-campus employment, and what CPT, OPT, and AT means. We will also discuss the new 2008 regulations concerning extensions of Optional Practical Training, and the H-1B "Cap Gap." This session will provide information useful to those who employ international students on campus as well as to those who help international students seek employment.

GLBT Worlds: A Look at Sexual Orientation and International Students

THURSDAY, MARCH 12th
Concepts of sexuality and sexual orientation, particularly those concerning gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered (GLBT) identity, are significantly delineated by the surrounding culture. Societal, legal, and religious views vary considerably from country to country and have an impact on GLBT students and their willingness and ability to come out. This workshop will provide background on GLBT issues as they pertain to different national and cultural backgrounds, how international students, both gay and straight, interpret American struggles with this topic, and how UI faculty and staff can be supportive of international students who identify as GLBT.

Coming to Iowa: Women’s Perspectives and Experiences

THURSDAY, March 26th
Female international students, scholars, and spouses come to the University of Iowa with a wide variety of cultural perspectives and experiences and face unique challenges and opportunities while they are here. This session will focus on the perspectives and experiences of women coming from East Asia, South Asia, and the Middle East and will include information on the perspectives and values they bring with them, as well as how they experience life here on the UI campus and in the surrounding community.

Country Culture Workshops

These workshops will present staff with the opportunity to acquire knowledge about the different cultural, social, and political trends in a particular country or culture. Participants will learn practical information on cultural issues in order to work with students from specific regions of the world more effectively. See below.
