Request for Homestay Placement

**Please note that the deadline for homestay requests was August 1. We cannot promise accommodations to anyone who applies after this date, and you should make other arrangements.

Please read through the information on this page, as this provides the guidelines and rules for pre-semester homestays, and when placed by the Office of International Students and Scholars, you agree to abide by these guidelines.

  • Dates: Homestays will be offered beginning on Friday, August 8. Students who have reserved an on-campus room will be accommodated until Monday, August 18 at which time they will be able to move on campus. Students who will be living off-campus will be expected to have a maximum homestay of 5 days, and must find appropriate off-campus housing at this time.
  • Eligibility: Any student who is new to The University of Iowa for the fall, 2008 semester. If a student is accompanied by his/her spouse, we will attempt to arrange a homestay for both; students accompanied by children may request a homestay, but should realize that it may be difficult to find a local family who can accommodate them (so apply early). We will not provide homestays for parents, other family members or friends. Information on local hotels is available at the Iowa City/Coralville Convention & Visitors Bureau website.
  • Homestay Hosts: Hosts will be families in the community as well as current University of Iowa students, both domestic and international. A basic background screening will be completed for volunteers, and new students will have a telephone number they can call in case of problems.
  • Costs: This is being offered free of charge by Iowa City residents who have an interest in international students and their welcome to the United States. Students who are provided a homestay will be responsible for all personal expenses including food (meals will not be provided). Students should expect to use public transportation to travel to and from campus. And while not required, you should consider bringing a small thank you gift, perhaps something typical of your home country, for your hosts.
  • Smoking: Students should expect to be in an environment that does not allow them to smoke inside, and must abide by the smoking rules of their hosts.
  • Deadline: Students who wish to have a pre-arranged homestay must submit this form by AUGUST 1, 2008. We cannot promise accommodations to anyone who applies after this date, and you should make other arrangements.

Please do not submit this form and also ask for housing assistance from any other source such as a student organization.
