Change of Immigration Status/Reinstatement
Nonimmigrants who were legally admitted to the U.S. may be able to change to another nonimmigrant status in the U.S. by filing an application with U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (C.I.S.) Students, scholars, and dependents who were legally admitted to the U.S. may be able to change their legal immigration status while in the U.S. by filing an application with the Department of Homeland Security's division of Citizenship & Immigration Services (CIS).
In order to file for a change of status, for reinstatement to student status, or to extend visitor visa (B-1/B-2) status, Form I-539 must be submitted with supporting documentation. OISS has information packets on several types of change of status.
Reinstatement to F-1 Status
Students applying for reinstatement to F-1 student status must complete both Form I-539 and Reinstatement Information Packet.
