F-1 Employment Options

Several employment options are available to students in F-1 status. Informational handouts can be found below on topics regarding on-campus employment, pre-completion, and post-completion work authorization. International students in F-1 status have permission to work on campus and are therefore eligible for Social Security numbers.

J-1 Employment Options

J-1 students who have a DS-2019 issued by The University of Iowa are eligible to work on-campus. All students should receive a letter from OISS at orientation authorizing on-campus employment. J-1 students at The University of Iowa who have a DS-2019 issued by another institution must receive employment authorization from their program sponsor to work.

In some cases the J-1 visa carries with it an, often inescapable, condition that requires you to return to your home country for two years upon completion of your studies (and academic training) before you are eligible for certain other visas in the U.S., including H-1B and permanent resident status. This "two-year residence" requirement applies to you if you receive any funding (including nominal travel grants) from your home government or a U.S. government agency; it can also apply if your field of endeavor lies on your home country's "skill's list".
