Journeys in World Politics initiative receives funding for 2021 session

As Alexia Sanchez (BA political science, social justice ’20) begins her fellowship with Running Start, a non-profit, non-partisan organization with a mission of getting more women involved in politics, she took some time to reflect on the impact of her three global learning experiences as an undergraduate at the University of Iowa.

The United States is undoubtedly undergoing a period of reckoning over race, not only a reexamination of our historical past, but a present-day challenge to what many perceive as institutional racism, injustice in policing and judicial systems, inequality of opportunity based on race and ethnicity, and a lack of diversity in our public institutions which serves to perpetuate inequities and minimize the claims of those who feel underrepresented. We invite you to join us on Thursday, October 22, from 5:30-7:00 p.m., for “Pursuing Racial Justice,” the first program in the 2020-2021 season of WorldCanvass.

When some Asian countries experienced the outbreak of coronavirus in January 2020, most people living in other parts of the world had thought it to be somebody else’s problem. This mindset persisted after the infectious disease of COVID-19 became a pandemic.

Anibal Mares Marquez (BBA accounting ’20), risk assurance associate at Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC), recently took some time to reflect on the impact of his study abroad experience as an undergraduate at the University of Iowa. Anibal studied in Paderno del Grappa, Italy, through CIMBA, and was the recipient of a Diversity Ambassador Scholarship.
