WorldCanvass Studio March 4 Helps Kick off UI Dancers in Company 2011 Season

Dancers in Company, the University of Iowa Dance Department’s touring repertory company, will kick off its 2011 season — its 27th — with a “home concert” at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 3-5, in Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall. The performance will feature the premiere of “Filles” by guest artist Julie Bour, a native of France now working as a choreographer and teacher in New York City.

As an added attraction, this year for the first time the performances will be streamed live on UITV and by UI Information Technology Services via the web. The live-streaming project will include live interviews from 7-7:30 p.m. on March 4 by Joan Kjaer for UI International Programs “WorldCanvass Studio” program.

The company will also perform an hour of excerpts from the repertory in a free Arts Share/Community Foundation of Johnson County concert for families at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6.

In addition to “Filles” by Julie Bour, the 2011 Dancers In Company program features the premieres of pieces by UI faculty members Armando Duarte, “Voce Nao Sabe Como Eu Te Amo,” Deanna Carter, “Inside Glass II,” Eloy Barragan, “Some Day,” and Alan Sener, “You Guys Are Cool.” Also on the program are “ …to make your acquaintance” by Jennifer Kayle, and “Conspiracies of the Body” by Charlotte Adams in collaboration with Fawn Boston-Kemple, Nicole Morford, Amy Stange and Jessi Yokus.

Julie Bour graduated from the Conservatoire de Paris before working with the Ballet Preljocaj. In 2002, she traveled to Israel to work with Inbal Pinto Dance Company. Later, she relocated to the United States, where her theatrical exploration of dance through crossover works like Julie Taymor’s Opera “Grendel” encouraged her own choreographic work. She is the co-found of The Flying Mammoth, a New York production company.

Receipts from the Dancers In Company home concerts help offset the costs of touring, which is coordinated by the UI Arts Share program. This season’s tour will take the company to Iowa City elementary schools, as well as Dubuque, Fairfield in Iowa and then on to performances in Elgin, Sycamore and Chicago, Ill., and St. Paul, Minn.

Arts Share and the Dance Department are units of the UI Division of Performing Arts in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
