WorldCanvass partners with FilmScene for 2014-2015 season

worldcanvass and filmscene have a new partnership

International Programs (IP) at the University of Iowa is pleased to announce a new partnership with FilmScene, Iowa City's non-profit cinema arts organization, which promises to bring a new flavor to IP’s television and radio series WorldCanvass.

Starting in September, WorldCanvass will be held once a month on Tuesday nights from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at FilmScene, a state-of-the-art theater located in the heart of Iowa City’s pedestrian mall. A social hour will precede each program from 4-5 p.m.

WorldCanvass, which enters its sixth season in fall 2014, brings together a variety of guests for informal discussion about international topics. Joan Kjaer hosts the talk show, which is recorded in front of a live audience for later broadcast on UITV, YouTube, iTunes, and the Public Radio Exchange. Podcasts can be downloaded for free from iTunes and past programs are available through IP’s website at http://international.uiowa.edu/worldcanvass.

Admission to WorldCanvass is free and open to the public. Concessions will be available for purchase at FilmScene and programs are split into three 30-minute segments, allowing guests to stretch, purchase food and drink, or come and go as needed.

Programs will occasionally be paired with film screenings at FilmScene to further engage audiences on important topics. Tickets for screenings can be purchased in advance or at the door.

"Film is a wonderful tool for engagement, and we look forward to working with the WorldCanvass team to find common ground for discussion of timely issues through our shared programming," said Andrew Sherbourne, co-founder of FilmScene.

Kjaer, who has organized and hosted WorldCanvass programing for the past five seasons, is confident that FilmScene and WorldCanvass, when paired, will be able to do more than either one could do alone.

“We’re thrilled to bring WorldCanvass into this wonderful community space and to partner with FilmScene’s creative team on topics and film pairings for our monthly shows. The film-watching experience will be enhanced by the thoughtful and provocative conversations of WorldCanvass guests, and the blending of WorldCanvass topics with relevant films will deepen the audience member’s appreciation of the subject.”

International Programs and FilmScene will hold a launch party to celebrate their new partnership on Sunday, August 24, from 7-10 p.m. at FilmScene. Admission is free and open to the public.

The first WorldCanvass program of the 2014-2015 season will be held Tuesday, September 2, from 5:00-6:30 p.m., and the topic under discussion is “The Passion that Drives Innovation.” The public is invited to enjoy the FilmScene space and have refreshments during the casual social hour that precedes each program, beginning at 4 p.m. More details about this program and the launch party will be available at a later date.

"It is important for us not only to bring great film to downtown Iowa City, but also to create enriching experiences for our patrons and community members,” said Emily Salmonson, director of operations at FilmScene. “WorldCanvass fits in pretty perfectly with what we are trying to establish and we are excited for the upcoming months!"
