Setting aright the UI Center for Human Rights

I was elated to see the 2009 University of Iowa International Day program include schools from the western Illinois area. The original idea of the International Day — as conceived by Paul Retish, then director of the International Education Office — was that it could benefit schools across Iowa and beyond.

My recent elation turned to disappointment, unfortunately, when I read about the funding predicaments at the UI Center for Human Rights. The center that came into being with much pomp has been doing commendable work in the area of human rights. The funding issues should have been envisioned long ago.
