Katulis To Discuss U.S. Policy In Middle East At Lecture
Date: Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

Place: International Commons (Room 1117), University Capitol Centre
Brian Katulis, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C., will present ""Middle East 'Hotspots': Perspectives on U.S. Policy for 2007" in the Old Capitol Town Center in downtown Iowa City. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a light lunch will be served.

Michael Schiffer To Discuss North Korean Policy

Michael Schiffer, program officer in Policy Analysis and Dialogue at the Stanley Foundation, will lecture on "North Korea Policy after the Nuclear Test" at the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC) luncheon. Muslim World Journal of Human Rights Electronic Resources
The Berkeley Electronic Press is pleased to announce a special issue of its peer-reviewed electronic journal, the Muslim World Journal of Human Rights (MWJHR). This issue examines Post-September 11th Developments in Human Rights in the Muslim World.
The University of Iowa has obtained a site license for the Muslim World Journal of Human Rights. This means that you have unrestricted access to the full-text of all papers if accessed from an on-campus computer. For off-campus access visit InfoHawk and search for the journal's title. Pomerantz Career Center Leadership Academy
The Career Leadership Academy is an exciting opportunity for students to develop their leadership and employment skills while earning academic credit. Career Leadership Academy credit-bearing program, four semesters in length, consisting of seminars, activities and events designed to give students an edge as leaders in the classroom, on-campus, and in their career fields. Academy students will discuss concepts of leadership and employability as well as have exclusive opportunities for networking with employers and community leaders.

The Des Moines Center Internship Program
The University of Iowa Pomerantz Career Center announces a new initiative designed to provide professional experience to University of Iowa students in the Des Moines metro area. This new internship program includes both classroom and service learning.
The University of Iowa Des Moines Center Internship Program allows undergraduate students to earn 12 credit hours while engaged in a paid professional internship in Iowa's state capitol.
Through the Des Moines Center experience, students:
- Apply knowledge and develop professional skills
- Discover and explore future career areas
- Improve communication and leadership skills
- Prepare for life after college
- Engage in service learning
- Earn academic credit

Study Abroad Orientations
Beginning this semester, the Office for Study Abroad is offering three new optional orientation sessions in addition to the mandatory TIPS presentation. These sessions are designed to give more specific information on a variety of topics. This semster's sessions include:
Traveling Around Europe (1117 UCC)
Monday, November 13th (10:30-11:30) and Wednesday, November 15th (1:30-2:30)
Peer advisers give suggestions on how to travel safely and economically around Europe based on their own experiences
Packing to Go Abroad (1117 UCC)
Tuesday, November 14th (4:30-5:30) and Wednesday, November 15th (2:30-3:30)
Get suggestions on what to pack and how to pack it for a semester abroad. You may be surprised by these first-hand ideas. Peer advisers will demonstrate good and bad packing techniques and give tips on items to leave behind as well as items to never forget!
Maximizing Language Learning Abroad (1100 UCC)
Tuesday, November 28th (4:30-5:30)
Lisa Dykstra, director of the Spanish General Education Program, will offer students practical tips to learn more language outside of the classroom. The session is designed for both foreign language majors and non-majors looking to get the most of their experience.

Mayflower Multi-purpose Room
Sunday, November 5 in the Mayflower MPR there will be a film screening of Hotel Rwanda. The room will be open at 2:40 for light refreshments with the movie beginning at 3:00.
Following the movie, there will be an optional discussion led by Edward Miner, PhD, Director of the UI African Studies program, and Kate Karacy, head of the UI Amnesty International and Human Trafficking groups. The discussion will last approximately one hour.

International Studies and PRISM have teamed up with the Pomerantz Career Center to provide an informational session on international careers. Join us this Wednesday, October 25th at 12:30 pm in the International Commons of the UCC. Jim Seyfer, a Placement Specialist in the Career Center, will be providing information on potential careers in the international arena as well as highlighting career resources available right here on the UI campus.

Careers for International Studies Majors
This fall, the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) will again sponsor the “Careers for Change” lecture series, a series of talks designed to introduce students to careers in social justice and human rights.
These lectures will provide you with information on careers possible with a major in International Studies.

The UICHR has many other career and informational resources available and encourages you to visit their website or their office in 1120 University Capitol Centre.
Course Options for First-Year Students
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is offering First-Year Seminars for the Spring 2007 semester. Some of these seminars contain material of interest to students in International Studies. The full list is available at the CLAS website
These seminars do not count toward the IS major requirements, but they make excellent electives to help you round out your degree. Remember, these seminars are a unique opportunity available only to first-year students so make sure you take advantage of them while you can!
