Scholarships Administered by ISSS
These scholarships are only available at certain times during the year. Announcements will be made in the ISSS Update email listserve when applications are being accepted.
Charles W. Day One-World Scholarship – for international undergraduate students - $5000. This scholarship was made possible for Dr. Charles Day. Dr. Day is a retired clinical psychologist and consultant who was raised in Iowa and earned three degrees from the UI (1960 B.A., 1962 M.A., 1964 Ph.D.) Dr. Day has worked in California, Iowa, and Asia. In 1986 he moved to India, spending five years teaching psychotherapy and counseling skills to health professionals and teachers, and three more years in Thailand as a Visiting Professor in Psychology. He returned to Des Moines in 1994. Dr. Day's international experiences solidified a desire to help deserving international students study in the U.S. and, by doing so, to contribute to world peace. The stated purpose of the One World Scholarship Fund is "to promote world peace, understanding, compassion, and harmony among different ethnic and cultural groups through higher education."
In order to be considered for this scholarship, international students must be undergraduates enrolled at the University of Iowa who demonstrate financial need and are citizens of developing countries. The scholarship amount will be credited directly to the student's U-Bill. It may be possible to renew the scholarship from one year to the next, provided the following occurs:
- Student continues to meet the criteria established above
- Student submits a short renewal application in April; renewal applications and deadlines will be sent to recipients
- Student understands funding ends with graduation

University of Iowa Student Government/Executive Council of Graduate and Professional Students Earn While You Learn Scholarships - for University of Iowa students who are working at least 15 hours/week to support their studies at the UI. Awards generally average $500 for one semester. Students may only receive on award per academic year. Eligibility will be determined by International Student and Scholar Services based on the criteria listed below. If there are more qualified applicants than scholarships available, priority will be given to those who demonstrate the most need. The award will be applied directly to the recipient's U-Bill. Applications will not be held over semester to semester, but an applicants may re-apply during the following year. In order to be eligible for the PSGI Earn While You Learn Scholarship, you must:
- Be a full-time student during the semester you are to receive the scholarship (registered for 12 s.h. for undergrads or 9 s.h. for grads)
- Have a minimum of $500 of unmet financial need
- Work a minimum of 15 hours per week (Documentation must be provided)
- Be in good academic standing with the University of Iowa and maintaining F-1 or J-1 status
