About the Program
The Department of Education administers the Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program. The program provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies. Research projects must focus on one or more of the following areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, East Central Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories). Projects on Western Europe are not eligible for this competition. Applications that focus on critical languages, as defined by the US Department of Education, will be awarded an additional 5 points. A list of these languages can be found in the federal register notice.
Application Process
Applications will be reviewed by an internal committee and put forth by the University of Iowa. Please see instructions for following the campus application process. Also see tips for putting together a competitive application.
Application narratives and cv's are due no later than November 6th, 2009. The complete application (including three graduate student reference forms submitted by your referring specialists and all other ancillary materials) is due on November 23rd, 2009.
Since IRB approval is important for ALL student research projects and must be obtained PRIOR to receiving funding,
