Summer Research Fellowships 2010
Deadline
November 11, 2009
Changes for 2009-2010
Awards are a fixed amount ($3000) and will be paid as summer salary only. Applicants are reminded that no faculty member can receive more than 3/9ths of their academic year salary for summer salary. If the faculty member is holding an Old Gold Fellowship, the total summer amount is limited to 2/9ths. If you will be exceeding these amounts with the award of the IP Summer Research Fellowship you are not eligible for that year.
Purpose
The International Programs Summer Research Fellowship is a developmental award for funding faculty research or creative activity with a clear international focus. An international location alone will not qualify as a strong project, and, in fact, the project may or may not involve travel abroad. Instead, the strongest proposals will demonstrate genuine engagement with international issues, whether aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, or global.
Each summer fellowship is expected to result in at least one publication, exhibit, or performance. Awards are a fixed amount ($3,000).
Three fellowships will be awarded for the next cycle. Recipients will be expected to present the results of their research at an informal Monday lunch lecture series entitled "International Mondays" sponsored by International Programs.
Eligibility
- All UI tenured, tenure-track, clinical, and International Programs' adjunct faculty are eligible to apply. Long-term faculty at the rank of Lecturer and Professional and Scientific staff will be considered for funding as the budget allows.
- Recipients of summer fellowships must commit themselves in writing to the equivalent of a minimum of one summer month of full-time work on their project.
- Priority will be given to faculty who have not recently held an IP Summer Research Fellowship.
Evaluation Criteria and Selection Process
Proposals for International Programs Summer Research Fellowships are reviewed against the following criteria:
- Engagement with international issues, whether aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, or global
- Scholarly, artistic, or clinical/technical merit of the project, including its originality and potential impact
- Adequacy and feasibility of the project in relation to the length of the award period
- Clarity and completeness of the proposal, including readability and references to relevant scholarship
- Potential of the project for contributing to the faculty member's professional development
- Potential for disseminating and/or applying anticipated achievements through publications, presentations, and development of curricular and instructional activities.
Proposals for International Programs Summer Fellowships are reviewed by a committee appointed and chaired by the Associate Dean of International Programs.
