Call for Proposals

Each summer International Programs (IP) offers a week-long professional development workshop for pre-college teachers (primarily middle and high school) focusing on what Iowans need to know about the rest of the world. Past institute themes have included Fragile Economies, Understanding the Middle East, U.S./Mexican Border and Immigration, Teaching African Cultures through Literature and Film, Religion and Conflict in Contemporary Europe, and Terrorism and the Media.

Proposals are currently being accepted for the week-long summer 2008 institute. One proposal will be selected by an advisory committee made up of faculty, IP staff, and area educators. The advisory committee is particularly interested in proposals that address the following themes, although other proposals will be accepted as well.

  • Globalization/World Economies
  • Environmental Issues
  • Iraq-Finding alternatives while building bridges for international understanding and peace
  • India/Pakistan
  • China
  • New generation of Latin American leaders
  • The shift of wealth and its impact on the U.N. and the U.S.
  • Women of the world, their lives and their leaders
  • World wide immigration patterns and their impact on the U.S. and its foreign policy
  • Future citizenship education for a safer world: geopatriotism, nationalism, etc.

Faculty Responsibilities

  1. Providing content for approximately 20 hours of total meeting time.
  2. Grading and reporting the educators' final projects. The educators will have the option of taking the course for 3 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credit.

All logistics (e.g. scheduling, transportation, lodging, registration, off-campus site visits) will be arranged by the IP staff.

Funds

Funds are available for supporting activities to be arranged by IP staff, such as:

  • Film Screenings
  • Museum Visits
  • Guest Speakers
  • Performances

The selected faculty member will be compensated $3,500 (along with fringe).

Application

To apply, please submit:

  • The cover sheet
  • Your Proposal
    Proposals should be at least two pages in length, typed, and double-spaced and should include the following:
    1. Topic or Geographical Area
    2. Rationale (How would this be helpful preparation for pre-college teachers trying to internationalize their courses/curriculum?)
    3. Division of content (What content would be taught on each day?)
    4. Target Audience (Open to all teachers or limited to specific disciplines? e.g. language, social studies, literature)
    5. (Optional) Suggestions for guest speakers, supplemental materials, field trips, etc., to enhance your course content.
