International Programs ~ Obermann Research Fellowships
Deadline: November 11, 2008 for Fall Obermann Scholars
April 13, 2009 for Spring Obermann Scholars
Applications are invited for a unique fellowship offered to UI faculty members who are scholars in residence this semester at the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies and engaged in research with an international emphasis.
Thanks to the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization and the C. Esco and Avalon L. Obermann Endowment, the University of Iowa International Programs (IP) and the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies (OCAS) are happy to announce the Stanley International Programs-Obermann Center Research Fellowships.
These fellowships will be awarded competitively to UI faculty who are scholars in residence at the Obermann Center whose research this semester focuses on international issues. While successful applicants must be in residence to apply and will be named as Fellows during this semester, the funds will be available for the year following. The goal is to help scholars continue the momentum on the work they have accomplished during their residency at the Obermann Center.
The award provides $3000 to support the proposed research; the funds may be used at the Scholar's discretion. One or two fellowships are awarded each semester. The research funds will be available effective December 15, 2008 and will be available for the twelve months following.
Each IP-OCAS Fellow will have the opportunity to share her or his research. The goal of the program is two-fold. We wish to bring international perspectives to the scholarly community at the Obermann Center, and, therefore, we especially seek applicants who have frequent interchange with their Center colleagues. We wish to integrate Obermann Scholars into the IP community, and award recipients will be asked to speak at one of IP's "International Mondays."
Eligibility
Applicants must be University of Iowa faculty members who have an appointment at the Obermann Center during the semester of their application. Preference may be given to UI faculty members on UI developmental or other research assignments or external grants that allow a faculty member to devote substantial time to research and scholarship. We regret that summer OCAS Scholars are not eligible for these awards.
Selection Process
Review of applications will be based on the following criteria:
- Applicant's engagement with scholarship or research that has a clear and appropriate international emphasis, whether aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, or global
- Scholarly, artistic, or clinical/technical merit of the project, including its originality and probable impact
- Potential of the project for contributing to the faculty member's professional development
- Potential for disseminating and/or applying anticipated achievements through publications, presentations, and development of curricular and instructional activities
- Demonstrated commitment to interchange with other Obermann Scholars
Applicants will be evaluated by a review panel. Preference will be given to those who have not held this award in the past and will not be awarded to the same recipient within a five-year span.
Last semester, fellowships were awarded for William Jones's work on Chinese-Western fusion concerti and for Bill Davies' study of the grammar of the Madurese language.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit the following:
- a one-page narrative summary, which
- describes your current project at the Obermann Center and its international nature,
- identifies any award that is already supporting the project (e.g., Career Development Award, Faculty Scholar Award, NEH Fellowship, etc.) and

Please send these application materials as an email attachment to Neda Barrett (neda-barrett@uiowa.edu) by Tuesday, November 11, 2008.
