Purpose
International Programs invites applications from UI faculty (tenured, tenure-track, clinical, International Programs' adjunct) and Professional and Scientific staff whose work requires international travel. These funds are provided by International Programs and the Office of the Vice President for Research to support international travel for research or creative activity or for the presentation of the results of research at international conferences.
Eligibility
All UI tenured, tenure-track, clinical, and International Programs' adjunct faculty are eligible to apply. Long-term faculty at the rank of Lecturer and Professional and Scientific staff will be considered for funding as the budget allows. In an effort to provide resources and opportunities leading to tenure, junior faculty may receive a slightly higher level of support. Funds may not be used to bring visiting faculty to Iowa as part of international exchanges. Separate requests for such funding should be addressed to the Associate Dean for International Programs.
Criteria
Highest priority will be given to applicants who seek support for international research projects or creative activities, such as collaborative work with foreign colleagues, participation in and presentation to international conferences, or international exhibitions or performances. Support for training projects is a lesser priority.
Difficult economic times have affected International Programs as they have so many of your units, and our budget available for faculty travel has been cut significantly. We still have grants to offer, but they will now normally range from $300 to $500. Proposals best meeting the criteria may receive additional support. Applicants can expect to receive partial, rather than full, support.
Applicants are required to contact their departments and/or colleges for initial financial support and should include in their application and as part of their budget a clear indication of the level of support that the unit is providing.
Please note: Applicants are also encouraged to obtain funds for travel from sources external to the university. Since this international travel fund has consolidated available resources within the University to support international travel, applicants should not generally seek support directly from the Office of Vice President for Research.
In order to acknowledge faculty contributions to International Programs, applicants who have worked with International Studies B.A. candidates on senior projects will be given preferential consideration in this competition.
Application and Selection Procedures
Proposals should be brief, but they must include the following documents:
- the completed application cover sheet
- a desciption (no longer than one page) of the activities to be undertaken and projected outcomes
- a one-page budget accounting for all relevant travel expenses
- a two-page curriculum vitae
Submit two paper copies and an electronic file (via e-mail) of the application to:
