Purpose and Eligibility
All UI tenured, tenure-track, clinical, lecturer, and International Programs' adjunct faculty are invited to submit proposals to design courses to serve the needs of the International Studies B.A. Applicants may propose one of three types of courses for an International Programs Curriculum Development Award: one-semester-hour modules, three-semester-hour honors course, or three-semester-hour courses in the faculty member's emphasis area. Modules are IP courses; in most cases, however, the three-hour courses will be situated in the faculty member's home department. The three-hour courses presumably will meet departmental as well as International Studies degree requirements.
One semester-hour module for 187: 001 Issues in International Studies
Faculty members may propose a one-semester-hour module for Issues in International Studies, which serves as a core course for the undergraduate major in International Studies. Three modules, led by three different faculty members, will be offered each semester. Each module will meet for either ten (75 minutes each on a twice/week schedule) or thirteen classes (50 minutes each on a three times/week schedule) and will be graded. Modules offer students a variety of interdisciplinary approaches to major international and global issues. For information regarding the B.A. in International Studies, please see the International Studies Web site.
Awardees will receive $4,000 in curriculum development support either as taxable summer salary (benefits are deducted from the $4,000) or as research and travel funds. In either case, funds must be disbursed by the end of the fiscal year in which the award is made. In accepting the award, the faculty member agrees to teach the module on overload at least three times over the next five years.
The recipient’s department or college agrees to a reduction of one course in the recipient’s teaching load after he or she has offered the module for the third time.
Three-semester-hour honors course
Faculty members may also propose an honors seminar in International Studies. These honors seminars should serve the curricular needs of both the International Studies major and the applicant's home department. Honors courses should focus on important topics in a sophisticated fashion and should be designed for a class of 15-20 outstanding undergraduates. As a part of the course, students should undertake a major project appropriate to the discipline and subject matter of the course.
Awardees will receive $4,000 in curriculum development support either as taxable summer salary (benefits are deducted from the $4,000) or as research and travel funds. In either case, funds must be disbursed by the end of the fiscal year in which the award is made. In accepting the award, the faculty member agrees to teach the honors course at least two times over the next three years. Because the course will also serve the needs of the applicant's home department, no course release will be awarded.
Three-semester-hour course in the Faculty Member's Emphasis Area
Faculty members may also propose to develop a new, innovative undergraduate course that will substantially strengthen the offerings of one of the emphasis areas in International Studies. These courses should serve the curricular needs of both the International Studies major and the applicant's home department.
Awardees will receive $4,000 in curriculum development support either as taxable summer salary (benefits are deducted from the $4,000) or as research and travel funds. In either case, funds must be disbursed by the end of the fiscal year in which the award is made. In accepting the award, the faculty member agrees to teach this course at least two times over the next three years. Because the course will also serve the needs of the applicant's home department, no course release will be awarded.
Selection Process
Proposals will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
- How well does the proposed course fulfill requirements for the International Studies B.A.?
- Does the proposed course have a clear international emphasis?
- Are the course's rationale and objectives appropriate for an interdisciplinary audience?
- Advanced level courses may require papers or projects that assume students are trained in disciplinary conventions. If the proposed course is a specialized, upper-level one, does the proposal indicate that non-majors could succeed?
Proposals will be reviewed by a faculty committee appointed and chaired by the Associate Dean of International Programs.
Application Process
Please submit four paper copies and an electronic file of the following materials:
- the cover sheet with DEO endorsement
- a course proposal of no more than two pages, including:
- description of the course
- objectives and rationale for the course
