Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program

Deadline: October 15, 2008

About the Program

The Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program is unique among Fulbright
educational programs in its one-for-one exchange of teachers. In the
traditional model, each U.S. school continues to pay the U.S. teacher's
salary and receives in exchange a highly qualified international teacher
(paid by his or her home school). Schools or districts can also host
international administrators in small groups from Brazil, Jordan,
Thailand or Uruguay, and participate in a non-simultaneous three to six
week job shadowing experience with their international counterpart from
Argentina or Mexico.

As a result of a Fulbright experience, the school, district, and
community benefit from the U.S. teacher's or administrator's increased
understanding of his/her host country, its language, academic community,
and exposure to new perspectives, teaching methods, or administrative
approaches. In addition, the international teacher or administrator
becomes an invaluable resource to the school, district, and community.
Not only do members of the community have an opportunity to learn about
another nation, but they also gain new insights into their own culture
through the eyes of a visiting foreign educator. Many previous
Fulbright teachers have added to their institutions' cultural diversity
by augmenting global awareness and establishing future classroom and
student exchanges as well as pen-pal relationships.

The program is open to educators of all levels from elementary to
four-year institutions. We are especially interested in having American
teachers in the exchange program reflect the diversity of the U.S.
population and the multiple disciplines that are taught in U.S. schools.
There is no limit to the number of educators who may apply to the
program from a single school, district or organization. Please remember
that applications for 2009-2010 program participation must be submitted
on-line or postmarked by October 15, 2008.
