PROGRAM OFFERINGS FOR 2013-2014

EARN A GLOBAL CERTIFICATE

Consistent with UI strategic goals on diversity and internationalization, International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and UI Learning & Development (UILD) are offering workshops on skills and insights useful to faculty and staff as they seek to educate and serve our international community. Those participants who complete the required introductory workshop plus their choice of four specialized workshops will be awarded a global certificate and be recognized on the ISSS website for completing the program.

Participants who plan to earn a certificate must register for and attend the introductory workshop and at least four specialized workshops of their choice. Participants do not need to take the introductory workshop before attending any of the specialized workshops.

There are no fees for any of the workshops offered via this series. All workshops will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, except for the introductory workshops. Dates and locations are listed below. Participants must register for all workshops in advance.  Confirmations will be sent via email for registrations received at least 6 days prior to each session.  Registration for each session is available in UI Employee Self-Service http://hris.uiowa.edu 

 

INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP

REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATE PROGRAM

Offered 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Wednesday, September 25, 2013 and repeated on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 in the International Commons, International Programs, Room #1117 University Capitol Centre.

The introductory workshop provides an overview of the international student and scholar population at the University of Iowa.  Participants will also have opportunities to discuss the special issues and concerns typically experienced by international students.

Immigration in Iowa:  The Past, Present, and Future

This workshop will explore the past, present, and future of (im)migration to the U.S. and Iowa.  We will explore myths about immigration, as well as the “push” and “pull” factors influencing today’s patterns of human migration.  We will discuss how contemporary immigration is changing Iowa communities and what institutions, like the University of Iowa, can do to build upon the strengths brought by these demographic changes and what we can do to address the challenges.

Cross-Cultural Conflict Prevention and Resolution

This workshop will give you an opportunity to discover your culturally preferred approach or style of resolving conflict through the use of the Intercultural Conflict Style Inventory developed by Dr. Mitchell Hammer. Once you are more aware of your own cultural style, you will be better able to understand and adapt to the styles of others and work more effectively in intercultural settings.

Supporting the International Student Community

This workshop will give you an opportunity to discover campus and community organizations supporting international students at the University of Iowa. The Friends of International Students (FIS), International Women’s Club, the Iowa City Foreign Relations Council (ICFRC), the Council for International Visitors to Iowa Cities (CIVIC), the Confucius Institute, and some student organizations will be sharing how they connect with international students and create a more inclusive campus and community.

Intercultural Growth: Let’s Get Personal
Wednesday, February 26, 2014
This workshop is based on the research of Dr. Milton Bennett and Dr. Mitchell Hammer.  It will include an introduction of Bennett’s Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) and its practical applications.  Participants will be asked to complete the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), which generates an individual profile of “worldview orientation to difference.”  Participants will also be invited to a follow-up meeting with a trained IDI facilitator to receive feedback on the issues identified by this IDI instrument, which may be facilitating and/or limiting development of intercultural growth.  Please note ISSS pays a $10 fee for each IDI instrument so participants signed up need to complete the IDI instrument and attend the workshop

International Students and Mental Health Concerns

Not unlike their domestic counterparts, international students may experience mental health issues at some point during their time at the University of Iowa.  This interactive session will provide a cultural perspective on the two most common mental health concerns experienced on campus: depression and anxiety. Participants will gain an understanding of how depression and anxiety symptoms are culturally bound, what the needs are for treatment, and how to intervene. Culturally appropriate ways to respond to distressed international students will be shared.

Immigration and Other Regulations That Affect International Students – Part I

This workshop will provide an introductory overview of the application and visa process, foundations of U.S. student immigration law, what ISSS must track and report to the federal government, and the basic rules that international students must follow.

COUNTRY-CULTURE WORKSHOPS

These workshops will present faculty and staff with the opportunity to acquire knowledge about the different cultural, educational, social, and political trends in a particular country or culture. Participants will learn practical information on cultural issues in order to work with students from specific countries and cultural groups more effectively.  See below.
