Although the term ‘interpersonal psychotherapy,’ or IPT, may not be as familiar to the lay person as ‘Freudian analysis’ or ‘cognitive behavior therapy,’ its use as a treatment for a variety of psychiatric disorders has steadily grown since its development more than three decades ago. On June 13, from 6–7 p.m. in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol Museum, WorldCanvass Studio host Joan Kjaer and a group of international experts will discuss IPT’s efficacy, explore cultural challenges to treatment, and compare and contrast the approach to psychological disorders and mental illness in the Canadian, Australian, and U.S. healthcare systems. The program is free and open to the public.
IPT is a psychotherapy whose focus is on interpersonal issues and is used, either alone or with medication, to improve a number of conditions affecting the patient, such as depression, anxiety disorder, eating disorders, and the like. The therapy’s goal is the resolution of symptoms and a typical course of treatment will run no longer than a few weeks. Guiding us through the discussion will be Dr. Scott Stuart, a professor in the UI Department of Psychiatry and director of the UIHC Women's Wellness and Counseling Service. He'll be joined by expert guests from around the world who gather from June 13–15 at the University of Iowa for the fifth annual international conference of the International Society for Interpersonal Psychotherapy. More information on the conference can be found here:http://interpersonalpsychotherapy.org/2013–isipt–conference–preliminary–program.
The WorldCanvass series from UI International Programs is produced before a live audience and distributed through television, radio, and the internet. WorldCanvass programs are held from 5–7 p.m. on Fridays once a month throughout the academic year. WorldCanvass Studio programs may be on any day of the week and are a shorter, more mobile version of WorldCanvass.
