Dir. Anusha Rizvi, 2010, 104 mins., in Hindi with English subtitles

In this exceedingly black comedy produced by superstar Aamir Khan, an impoverished peasant farmer named Nathu, egged on by a greedy elder brother, decides to commit suicide in the hope that government “compensation” will rescue his unruly family from debt and save their land. When news of his plan appears in a local Hindi daily, the story migrates to national media and soon reporters, TV crews, and politicians (in the loosely fictional state of “Mukhya Pradesh”) descend on the humble village of Peepli in a feeding frenzy. Deftly acted by a distinctly non–glamorous cast (with the exception of Malaika Shenoy as the anchorwoman for an English TV channel), the film takes on the serious subject of farm debt and suicides while satirizing the toxic blend of corrupt politics, “development” schemes, and 24–hour news media in India now.
