“Battlefield Earth: Global Health and Violent Conflict” is the theme of the 2014 Global Health Studies Conference, which will be held March 28–30 at the University of Iowa.

Community members, faculty, staff, and students who wish to attend the course for no credit can fill out the registration form on the conference website:–health/2014–battlefield–earth–global–health–and–violent–conflict. Course fee is $40

It has been claimed that war accounts for more death and disability than many major diseases combined. World wars with millions of casualties are fading from global memory. New forms of armed conflict and civil war have steadily increased, disrupting fragile health infrastructures, and bringing death and injury to combatants and civilians alike. This conference will examine the many interfaces between violent conflict and health, including increased spread of infectious disease, exploitation of vulnerable populations, degradation of the global environment, and prevention of violence through health promotion.
