The final talk of the spring 2013 European Studies Group lecture series, presented by UI faculty member Luis Martín–Estudillo, will be held Friday, May 3, 2013, at noon in University Capitol Centre, Room 2520B, on the topic of "Confabulations: Guarding and Regarding Fortress Europe's Southern Walls." This event is free and open to the public. A light luncheon will be served.

A few Spanish artists and intellectuals have been critical of official programs that adhere to the notion of “Fortress Europe,” and along with it, an essentialist conception of European identity. This talk will focus on video artist Valeriano López, whose work exposes in irreverent ways the contradictions between the benevolent official discourse of the European Union and its actual policies.

Luis Martín–Estudillo is an associate professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Iowa, specializing in Spanish literature and culture from the 20th and 21st centuries.

This series is presented by the European Studies Group in UI International Programs. Visit http://international.uiowa.edu/european–studies/european–studies–group to see the full series schedule.
