Iowa City's first Carnaval celebration is quickly approaching – the city–wide parade will be held June 9th. To get in the spirit, the University ofIowa Museum of Art has paired with Iowa CityCarnaval to put together a festive Saturday, filled with art, food, and dance!
The Carnaval Saturday Celebration will be held on April 20th in North Hall, Room B1, on the corner of Capitol St. and Davenport St. The event is free & open to the public.
Clary Salandy, a carnaval artist and designer from Trinidad will give a short presentation during the event, preceding her artist talk on April 24. Additionally, Modei Akyea, UI Afro–Cuban dance instructor, will teach a special dance demo and discuss the roots of African dance in contemporary carnaval dance.
