When the curtain goes up in Theatre B of the UI Theatre Building at 9pm on Tuesday, March 12th, another will rise simultaneously 7,000 miles away in Shanghai, China. Book Wings China is a free bilingual collaborative performance that invites audiences to discover (in real time, using digital videoconferencing technologies), six new 10 minute plays commissioned from hot young American and Chinese playwrights on the theme of “Migration.” The plays performed for Book Wings China take us from the battlefields of Afghanistan to a forced labor camp for chickens, and allow audiences in Iowa City and Shanghai, joined by viewers from around the globe via a live video stream, to witness actors, directors, and new media specialists from the UI Dept. of Theatre Arts and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre working side by side to create a one–of–a–kind dramatic performance. Audience members and viewers can join the conversation after the performance via Twitter (hashtag #bookw). Book Wings China is based on the groundbreaking Book Wings collaborative theatre model inaugurated by the International Writing Program in collaboration with the Moscow Art Theatre in 2012.
The second installment of Book Wings Russia will take place on Thursday, March 14th at 10:00 am, also in Theatre B of the UI Theatre Building. For more info, visit: http://iwp.uiowa.edu/programs/book–wings
