The European Studies Group will welcome Michael Ugarte of the University of Missouri for his lecture “African Migrants to Spain and the (Silent) Voice of the Subaltern” on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in Room 2390 University Capitol Centre. This event is free and open to the public.

By focusing on the geographical, emotional, and intellectual dynamics of human movements between Africa and Europe, Ugarte offers an inroad to "the consciousness of an age" and an understanding of the global realities that will define the cultural, economic, and political currents of the 21st century.

Ugarte is Middlebush Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Missouri. His publications include Madrid 1900: The Capital as Cradle of Culture and Shifting Ground: Spanish Civil War Exile Literature.
