During the fall of 2014, International Student and Scholar Services will host two contests -- photo and video – for full-time University of Iowa student holding a non-immigrant F-1 or J-1 student visa. More information on these individual contests can be found below. Prizes are awarded via the student’s UBill. Feel free to enter both the photo and video contests.
Entrants and winners will be notified via email and a public announcement will be made. Questions about this process or the contest in general can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The photo contest is open to any full-time University of Iowa student holding a non-immigrant F-1 or J-1 student visa. Applicants may submit up to two photographs overall (either two in one category or one in each). We will select one winning photo from each category and a third overall Grand Prize winner. All photos must have been taken by the entrant in the U.S. Please read the following category descriptions closely to determine where your photo submissions belong:
CATEGORY 1: Show us your Hawkeye Spirit
As the title implies, we are looking for photos in this category that depict you or another international student showing off your love of the University of Iowa. All photos in this category must include at least one UI international student.
CATEGORY 2: Exploring local cultures and traditions
What local cultures and traditions have you experienced since coming to Iowa? Feel free to get creative with this category as you show us how you’ve interacted with new cultural traditions in the United States.
Please note that the use of copyrighted material not owned by the photographer or extensive use of Photoshop (e.g. combining different photographs into one composite image) will be grounds for immediate disqualification.
Overall grand prize: $150
First prize, Student Experiences: $100
First prize, Exploring local cultures and traditions: $100
The video contest is open to any full-time University of Iowa student holding a non-immigrant F-1 or J-1 student visa. Applicants may submit a single video between 90 seconds and three minutes in length. We want you to give us a personal, reflective look into some aspect of your experience in the U.S. Videos must be produced by the person entering the contest.
Possible subjects might include:
- the biggest cultural differences you faced
- tips for future international students
- an introduction to Iowa City
- differences in food here and in your home country
- top ten lessons you’ve learned in the U.S.
These are just a few ideas. Creativity is encouraged!
Please note that the use of copyrighted material like photos, music, or videos that do not belong to the participant will result in an automatic disqualification from this contest. See below for a list of websites that supply royalty-free music.
