Iowa school administrators and educators traveled to China with 400 of their colleagues from school districts throughout the United States. The 400 United States delegates were divided into 10 groups of 40 which traveled on to various provinces. Our group went to the city of Tianjin in Tianjin province where we visited elementary, junior/senior high schools and had the opportunity to talk with teachers and school officials.

Calligraphy Workshop October 24, 2012
Professor Lim conducted another successful interactive calligraphy workshop. Students of many ages learned about the history of calligraphy and used brush/ink to practice their own calligraphy strokes. Video
Autumn Moon Festival September 30, 2012
Students and their families enjoyed an afternoon of performances, food and fun celebrating the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Performances included poetry, storytelling, singing, piano and taiji.

Chinese New Year Celebration
The University of Iowa Chinese Language Program, with the sponsorship of the Confucius Institute, held a Chinese New Year Celebration in the spring of 2012. The Celebration featured a hands-on-dumping-making demonstration, Chinese riddle trivia, music, singing, Chinese history and more!
The Chinese New Year Celebration at the University of Iowa is held annually thanks to the great organizing done by the Chinese Language Program.
Chinese Calligraphy Workshops
The Confucius Institute holds Chinese Calligraphy workshops quarterly. Workshop participants get hands-on experience using calligraphy ink and brushes. No previous experience with Chinese or Chinese Calligraphy is required and all workshops are free and open to the public.
Chinese Calligraphy Workshops are led by Dr. Ramon Lim, University of Iowa Professor Emeritus of Neurology and winner of the 2005 Eighth International Calligraphy Competition. Dr. Lim has his works widely exhibited in China, Korea and Japan.
Anda Mongolian Throat Singing October 2011
Anda Union provided an interactive workshop for the University of Iowa Confucius Institute. Weaving together regional musical traditions, styles, and instrumentation passed from generation to generation—including hoomai (guttural throat song) and the morin huur (the horse head fiddle)—these young, inspiring musicians are committed to keeping their legacy alive amidst an increasingly industrialized environment. The result offers a rare glimpse into a nearly forgotten musical landscape, breathing new life into past treasures. The 2012 national tour of the AnDa Union is part of a major, multi-year cultural exchange with Minneapolis-based Arts Midwest, the Chinese Ministry of Culture, and the US Major University Presenter's consortium. Support for the tour has been provided by the Ministry of Culture, People's Republic of China.
Autumn Moon Festival: September 2011
The Chinese Autumn Moon Festival is an annual harvest celebration. Starting centuries ago, the Autumn Moon Festival is still celebrated in modern day China and this year in Davenport, Iowa! This year on September 12th the Confucius Institute's Autumn Moon Festival kicked off St. Ambrose University's Awakening the Dragon--a year dedicated to learning about China through lectures, fun community events and more.

Let's Talk About China
Let's Talk About China was a Confucius Institute presentation and free form discussion held March 2011 at the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center and was free and open to the public. People that had been to China, heard a lot about it, or were just curious joined the Confucius Institute to talk about China. In the first half hour, Confucius Institute Program Associate Andrea Niehaus led a discussion about living in China, famous cultural differences and fun places. Ms. Niehaus showed pictures and encouraged program attendees to participate, share photos, and chat. In the second half hour, Confucius Institute Curriculum Coordinator Yu Huo gave a free Confucius Institute introductory lesson. Ms. Huo taught some beginning Chinese phrases, numbers and more!
Presentations to People Traveling to China
The Confucius Institute has been invited to prepare travelers of all ages for their trips to China. Presentations have included giving Chinese names, Chinese name pronunciation, "Survival Chinese" lessons, advise of culture shock, information about Chinese cities, etc.
STARTALK 2010
In 2010, the Confucius Institute received a grant from STARTALK, a program of the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland to organize an intensive Chinese language summer camp for Iowa high school students.
STARTALK summer campers were given an introduction to Mandarin Chinese and Chinese culture through language classes, Chinese calligraphy workshops, gongfu demonstrations and more!
