Description & Objectives
The Family Mandarin Chinese Classes are designed for pre-K (3 years old) through 4th grade students to attend with one or both parents. Family members will be introduced to Mandarin Chinese in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Examples of topics include greetings, colors, counting, animals, food, clothes, the home and more. We will incorporate art, music, dance and/or food into our learning. Reasonably priced instructional materials will be available for purchase in class.
Family members are encouraged to practice during the week. In addition to hand-outs and any instructional materials purchased, there will also be bilingual storybooks, cookbooks and flash cards available for checkout. Homework will be made available for older children if requested.
Instruction
Ms. XU Xiaona is a teacher of Chinese as a foreign language at East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai. She has a BA degree in Chinese linguistics and a MA degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language.
Enrollment Fee and Cost of Materials
The base enrollment fee is $50 for a family with one child (and at least one parent). For each additional child, the enrollment fee is increased by $20. Please note: Although we have two sections, the fee will not be increased if you have children in both sections. For example, a family with two children (one in each section) will pay $70. To enroll, please send your completed enrollment form and check (made payable to The Confucius Institute) to Rebecca Kessler, The Confucius Institute at The University of Iowa, 1120 University Capitol Centre, Iowa City, IA 52242.
