Mandarin Chinese 001:SUMIC-New Summer Session Course (POSTER)
Beginning Level Class for individuals new to Chinese language learning
The purpose of this course is to lay groundwork for the study of Modern Standard Chinese and develop students' functional language ability. By the end of this course, learners should be able to correctly read and spell pinyin (Chinese pronunciation system), master the four tones, and write basic strokes, some frequently used Chinese radicals (character components) and characters. Students will learn and practice common expressions that are used in basic daily conversations.

中文 For beginner students who are new to Chinese language learning or would like a review of the basics.
CM001 This is an introductory course in Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) language and is designed to develop students’ functional language ability. Upon completion of this class, students will have learned the phonetic pronunciation system (pinyin), the basic strokes, a few important radicals and about 100 new characters. Students will practice classroom expressions, common expressions used in basic daily conversations, short dialogs and basic grammar patterns in Mandarin Chinese.
Enrollment is open to adults age 14 and up!

中文 For students who are already familiar with the Chinese Romanization system, Pinyin.
Continue learning Mandarin Chinese with the Confucius Institute!
This class is offered to the returning students who have finished learning pinyin and some basic Chinese. We will continue learning short dialogs on daily life. New characters and grammar patterns will be introduced in this class.
Enrollment is open to anyone age 14 and up!

Family Class-Iowa City Youth (age 6-13) Courses
家庭课 Family Mandarin 001
This is a Mandarin Chinese class open for 6-13 years old children with parents. Level 001:Sp is open for those who haven't learned the target language through regular classroom instruction. The curriculum is developed based on topic units including: greetings and introduction, numbers and age, weather and seasons, traditional Chinese and American festivals, colors, family, clothing, etc. The class will be student-centered and communication-based. To develop the learners' interests and expand their knowledge on Chinese langauge and culture, various types of activities will be adopted, including games, songs, story-telling, role-play, and craft projects. Chinese writing system will be introduced in this class.

This is a class open for the returning students with parents who have completed the session in 2012 Fall semester. We will continue learning the Chinese language and culture through thematic units such as Chinese zodiacs, traditional Chinese and American festivals, time, countries, school, food, sports, and animals. We will further explore topics of previous lessons and introduce new vocabulary, sentence patterns and short dialogs. Chinese pronunciation system will be introduced in this class.
Enrollment is open to children 6-13 and their parent, grandparent or guardian.
