International Student Photo and Essay Contests

2013 International Student Photo Contest

The photo contest is open to any full-time University of Iowa student holding a non-immigrant F-1 or J-1 student visa. Applicants may submit up to two photographs overall (either two in one category or one in each). We will select one winning photo from each category and a third overall Grand Prize winner. Please read the following category descriptions closely to determine where your photo submissions belong:

CATEGORY 1: Show us your Hawkeye Spirit

As the title implies, we are looking for photos in this category that depict you or another international student showing off your love of the University of Iowa. Maybe it’s by attending a football game dressed from head to toe in black and gold or relaxing on the Pentacrest with your friends. All photos in this category must include at least one UI international student.

CATEGORY 2: Exploring local cultures and traditions

What local cultures and traditions have you experienced since coming to Iowa? Feel free to get creative with this category as you show us how you’ve interacted with new cultural traditions in the United States. Again, photos including UI international students are encouraged.

Please note that the use of copyrighted material not owned by the photographer or extensive use of Photoshop (e.g. combining different photographs into one composite image) will be grounds for immediate disqualification.

2013 International Student Essay Contest

"Coming to America"
When first arriving at the University of Iowa, every international student encounters a unique set of events and impressions. This transition is part of the value of studying in another country, and the learning that takes place during this period of adjustment teaches important lessons. This essay contest is your chance to share your experiences in Coming to America. You are invited to write about your experiences, cross-cultural encounters (good and not-so-good), insights, thoughts, and emotions upon coming to the United States and adjusting to your new life as a UI student. Tell us your story of coming to the U.S. and the University of Iowa, including such things as the high points, low points, pleasant surprises, disappointments, confusing or funny situations, frustrating encounters, and encouraging interactions you have had thus far.

Essays will be judged by a committee of volunteers from the University and community. Winning essays will be distributed both on and off campus, and students submitting essays agree that their essays may be used in UI publications and promotional materials.
