Protecting Rights of Detained Immigrants & Asylum Seekers
Overview:
This new UICHR initiative will educate students and community members about the status of detained immigrants in Iowa, detention standards and issues; facilitate advocacy and research on immigration and detention policy and undertake data collection; provide resources for networking and coalition-building; and assist legal-service providers in informing detainees about their legal rights and remedies. *Postville Resources: There is still a need for donations in Postville, Ia following the raids last year. The primary need is financial donations that can allow St. Bridget's Church to continue supporting about 100 people (adults who were detained and who are awaiting immigration decisions and their dependants). This has represented an outlay of close to $80,000 a month, and recent developments with the immigration cases seem to indicate this could go on for many more months.
