A Message from the Director

Welcome to the UI Center for Human Rights! Take some time to explore the site and the many projects in which we are currently engaged, from our signature Human Rights Index, to research in global climate change, to education and training in immigration issues affecting Iowans, to reading groups on campus. Along with essential contributions by student volunteers and interns, without your donations we could not continue the many activities we undertake in support of human rights education, research, and outreach.

What Felisa Tibbitts, the Executive Director of Human Rights Education Associates (HREA), told the U.S. Congressional Human Rights Caucus in 2007 applies particularly well to a Center such as ours, housed within a world-class educational institution such as The University of Iowa: "Americans may associate human-rights education with a particular agenda, but in fact knowledge of the human rights framework is apolitical. Human rights education, which is a central underpinning of the human rights legal framework, complements education about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. U.S. constitutional education and education about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are both necessary for democratic and rule-abiding citizenship in the modern world."

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Center today.
