Global Health Studies Program Steering Committee Members, 2007-08

GHSP policies, courses, and program offerings are determined by a steering committee of 12 members consisting of faculty from a wide range of disciplines including medical humanities, public health, nursing, dentistry, history, anthropology and women's studies as well as P & S staff and students who meet as a body at least twice each semester. The steering committee also uses these meetings to evaluate all aspects of the program.

Paul Greenough, Ph.D.

Professor of History, founder and immediate past director GHSP, current director of the Crossing Borders: Revitalizing Area Studies graduate training project, University of Iowa. His research interests include the history of international public health, history of science and technology in South Asia, global immunization programs, and environmental health history in South and Southeast Asia. Research areas include India, Nepal and Tanzania-Zanzibar.

Susan Joslyn, M.D.

Dr. Joslyn is a Professor of Epidemiology and Associate Dean of Graduate Academic Affairs at the University of Northern Iowa.  She is also an Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at The University of Iowa College of Public Health.  Dr. Joslyn's research interests include breast cancer epidemiology, bladder/urologic cancer epidemiology and racial difference in survival and treatment of cancer.

Robin Ungar, M.S.

Program associate in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, and Associate Director for the Center for International Rural and Environmental Health (CIREH).  Involved in two training programs with Central and Eastern European public health and research institiutions in Slovakia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Serbia and Croatia.  Research interests include Agricultural health and safety, Environmental and Occupational Health and injury prevention.  Administrates a program through CIREH that funds students to do international research and international summer interships.

Michele Yehieli, Dr. P.H.

Dr. Michele Yehieli is an Associate Professor in the Division of Health Promotion and Education at the University of Northern Iowa, where she is the recipient of the Richard Remington Award, and other local, state, and national honors for outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service in the health and human rights field. Dr. Yehieli is the Executive Director of the Iowa EXPORT Center of Excellence on Health Disparities, a model organization funded by the National Institutes of Health to improve health equity for underserved populations.  Dr. Yehieli’s primary areas of specialty include refugee, minority, and immigrant care, as well as maternal and child health for underserved populations.  Dr. Yehieli has more than 25 years of field experience in public health, conducting programs both domestically and internationally with refugees, women, children, minorities, the elderly, and other at-risk individuals.
