Abstract of the Talk
Learning and using more than one language is a common experience for an increasing number of people, and considerable attention has been devoted to the study of cognitive processing in bilingual or multilingual speakers. This lecture will discuss the cognitive consequences of bilingual education, drawing upon a continuing program of experimental psycholinguistic research. In reviewing the results of several lines of research, we will see (a) a number of key factors in bilingual processing and (b) how these factors can possibly affect bilinguals’ language and cognition. The implications of the results for educationalpractices will also be discussed.
