Fellows
Exepectations & Responsibilities
Your department's selection of you as a Crossing Borders Fellow guarantees a half-time assistantship for three years. A portion of this support is being offered as a Fellowship that frees you to take seminars and to begin or continue the study of foreign languages.
Participation in the Program also ensures that you will receive (i) departmental mentoring, (ii) admission to special interdisciplinary seminars and annual convocations, (iii) close advising to obtain summer language study scholarships or summer travel grants for exploring research sites in preparation for writing a dissertation prospectus and successful research Fellowship applications.
At the same time you will be expected to (i) develop research skills in two foreign languages, (ii) enroll in at least four Crossing Borders seminars over the three years, and (iii) participate in extra-classroom Crossing Borders activities including Convocations. First-year CB fellows are also expected to register for a 1 semester-hour Crossing Borders Pro-seminar (16:049:001) during both semesters.
In the week before fall classes begin, please arrange to meet your departmental Crossing Borders Mentor, who will discuss with you plans for the study of foreign languages, for taking a sequence of Crossing Borders seminars and for finding sources of funding for summer travel. Please do not register for your Crossing Borders seminars until after you have had a meeting with the departmental Mentor.
