An upcoming one-day conference at the University of Iowa will discuss the challenges workers face in Iowa’s growing low-wage economy. The conference is designed to bring together Iowa immigrant rights advocates, labor union activists, faith leaders, and community service providers to review basic workplace legal protections and discuss ways communities can promote justice for all Iowa workers.

Each summer, UI International Programs hosts a Global Education Summer Institute for K-12 teachers throughout the State of Iowa. This year’s theme broadly addressed global literacy concepts and the 21st century skills of the Iowa Core Curriculum.

In this video, Rochelle Liu talks about her study abroad experience in Beijing, China. She was able to connect to her extended Chinese family, fulfill requirements for her Chinese minor, and feed her sense of adventure by zip-lining off the Great Wall of China. Liu advises students to be open minded of other cultures and learn to appreciate your host country’s history and people.

While studying abroad in Chile, Samantha Sidwell first connected with people through music.
Sidwell, a 2011 UI graduate, was placed in a host family full of musicians and quickly became involved in music locally by playing cello in an orquestra at her university and taking lessons from a Chilean instructor.

The UI’s annual Latin dance party Gusto Latino will be held Friday, April 29, 2011, from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Old Brick, 26 E. Market St., Iowa City. The event is open to the public and tickets are available at the door. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and free for students with an ID.

The assessment trip featured in this video was part of a development partnership between the University of Iowa, Engineers Without Borders USA, Self-Help International and people living in Ghana. The hope is that sustainable development focused on water, sanitation and energy will occur over time in ways that enable improved community health and prosperity.

“It’s a small place but it’s a big place.” So says law professor Peter Shirlow from Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Shirlow isn’t talking about Belfast but about Iowa City, his destination 24 years ago when he won a prestigious Stanley Scholarship to study at the University of Iowa. The Stanley award allowed him to come to the UI for a year’s study and, just as importantly, to Iowa City where he established close friendships that have remained strong in spite of distance and the passage of time.
