The assessment trip featured in this video was part of a development partnership between the University of Iowa, Engineers Without Borders USA, Self-Help International and people living in Ghana. The hope is that sustainable development focused on water, sanitation and energy will occur over time in ways that enable improved community health and prosperity.

Interest in the Peace Corps is increasing at University of Iowa, the university’s Peace Corps representative said.
So far this fall, 123 people have attended information sessions, local representative Meredith Mahy Gall said. The next information session is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1 in the International Commons of the University Capitol Centre.
Renugan Raidoo spent summer 2010 in Mainz, Germany, on an internship arranged by the German Academic Exchange Service, called RISE (Research Internships in Science & Engineering). The program pairs an undergraduate student with a German Ph.D. student to assist in doctoral research.

The hardest thing Rachel Nathanson had to do during her internship last summer was not do hands-on work.
Sitting in the World Bank building, interning with the World Bank Inspection Panel, Nathanson did some desk research with internal bank documents, but the “doer” felt conflicted and stifled. A first-year law student, she said, she prefers to be “out in the field.”

Last year, the small Zambian village of Libuyu needed a bridge in order to access the only school in the area without having to walk several miles around a dangerous river.
But they didn’t have the resources. And when a group of students from the University of Washington backed out at the last minute, five engineering students from the University of Iowa stepped in.
