A University of Iowa student studying in Egypt is safe, and he has decided to stay in the country, even as protests continue, UI officials said Tuesday.

The student, who is enrolled at the American University in Cairo, has spoken with his parents, who subsequently contacted UI staff, said Downing Thomas, the dean of International Programs.

Instead of staring at a PowerPoint presentation, Introduction to International Relations students could soon be gazing onto the beaches of Normandy.

University of Iowa students will no longer have to wade through all their general-education requirements in classrooms overlooking the Pentacrest. Instead, they’ll have the opportunity to take in London, Paris, or Florence.

Despite harsh economic times, University of Iowa students are continuing to find the means to study overseas.

Nationwide, the number of students who studied abroad for credit dropped slightly in 2008-09—the first time such a decrease has occurred since the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange first released numbers 25 years ago.

Renugan Raidoo spent summer 2010 in Mainz, Germany, on an internship arranged by the German Academic Exchange Service, called RISE (Research Internships in Science & Engineering). The program pairs an undergraduate student with a German Ph.D. student to assist in doctoral research.

International student enrollment at the University of Iowa is growing faster than national trends, especially among undergraduates, and the percentage of UI students studying abroad continues to climb. This is according to data released today by the UI International Student & Scholar Services and the UI Office for Study Abroad in conjunction with the Open Doors Report.

The University of Iowa and Korea’s National Institute for International Education have created a new partnership that offers UI undergraduate students and alumni the opportunity to spend six or 12 months teaching English in primary schools in South Korea as part of the TaLK, or Teach and Learn Korean program.

The UI Office for Study Abroad will hold its annual study abroad fair Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second floor of the University Capitol Centre, near the south end. All university students are invited to attend to learn about global education opportunities.
