Middle Eastern Awareness Week celebrated at UI April 24-30

The Arab Students Association (ASA) will be hosting Middle Eastern Awareness Week from April 24th to April 30th, 2011. Throughout this week, ASA and other middle-eastern cultural organizations will be hosting a series of speakers and events, ending the week with ASA’s keynote event DANCE OF ARABIA 2011, the largest Middle Eastern event in the state of Iowa!

Events during Middle Eastern Awareness week include:

“Midwest To Mideast: Healthcare During Conflict”
3 UI medical students discuss their experiences in Palestinian and Israeli hospitals
When: Monday, April 25, 6-7 p.m.

“Achieving Peace in Palestine”
A presentation and discussion with John Dabeet
When: Thursday, April 28th, 6:30 p.m.
Where: Meeting Room A, Iowa City Public Library
Description: Professor John Dabeet, founder and president of Americans and Palestinians for Peace (AmPal) and a professor of Economics at Eastern Iowa Community College in Muscatine, Iowa, will explain why he believes that there can really be no true peace in the Middle East without justice. He will discuss what this “justice” would entail, and how it’s implementation is the only way to a real and lasting peace for both peoples.

“Dance of Arabia”

When: Saturday, April 30, 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Where: West High Auditorium (2901 Melrose Ave, Iowa City)
Description: Bringing the Mideast to the Midwest, the Arab Students Association is proud to present Sa’id Music and Dance company of Los Angeles, California–a group of professional dancers reflecting the art of Arabic folkloric dance! The event will consist of a phenomenal performance and folkloric fashion show! A sneak peek of Dance of Arabia can be found at: http://www.youtube.com.

Rates are $25/person for the general public and $18 for students (must present Student ID).
