International Studies student wins Pearson Prize

University of Iowa student Evelyn Cardenas has been awarded the $10,000 Pearson Prize for Higher Education.
The award, given by the Pearson Foundation, recognized “exemplary students who are distinguishing themselves through commitment to community service” while continuing their studies, according to a news release.
Cardenas completed an associate’s degree at Kirkwood Community College and now is studying business and international studies at UI. The mother of two children and a full-time student, she also is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, participates in fundraisers and meetings and helps as a translator for Spanish-speaking families.
She was one of 20 students to win the top prize of $10,000 from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, which administered the award through the Pearson Foundation.
