Fall 2013 SASP Seminar Series

The South Asian Studies Program (SASP) will continue its fall seminar series Friday, Sept. 20, will a presentation by Niraja Gopal Jayal on “Indian Citizenship: A Century of Disagreement.” The event is free and open to the public and will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Room 2390, University Capitol Centre.

Every major debate relating to citizenship in today’s world – from the status of undocumented aliens to the rights of cultural minorities – is being enacted in the political practice of contemporary India. The idea of the Indian citizen is at once the defining aspiration of modern India as also its most contested political idea. This talk surveys a century of disagreement about citizenship in India, on three of its core dimensions: citizenship as legal status; citizenship as rights and entitlements; and citizenship as identity. These varied disputations underline the fragility of the constitutional settlement, and signal the erosion of its vision of citizenship.
