The Rev. Mark Kiyimba was forced to leave his Ugandan home in March for his safety.
The gay-rights activist, now in the United States, stood before a captivated church crowd Sunday morning to discuss Uganda’s gay rights issues.
Rev. Mark Kiyimba, the founding minister of the Unitarian-Universalist Church in Kampala, Uganda, will be speaking about the struggle for LGBT rights in Uganda at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 18, in the Iowa City Public Library Meeting Room A. The event is free and open to the public.
Activities in India–from faculty partnerships and institutional visits, to study abroad efforts–have increased substantially in the past few years. Our India “Winterim” study abroad program, which takes place each year from the end of December to the beginning of the spring semester in late January, is a case in point. In the winter term, 2006-07, there was a single course offered in India, and 17 students enrolled. By any standard measure, a group of 17 is a healthy start for a first-time study abroad program. But from 2006-07 to 2010-11, the program has exploded. This past winter, 16

The painting Endless Flight uses the bright, vivid colors of the Caribbean as it articulates shapes and forms across the surface of the canvas, infusing the piece with life and meaning.
The collection of photos on Scott King’s office wall are proof of his dedication to international learning. King, 57, grew up in Maine and said he only traveled outside of New England two times before he left for college. Since then he’s traveled to more than 40 countries as a student and a professional. He has worked at the University of Iowa as the Assistant Dean of International Programs in the International Student & Scholar Services for seven years, and has helped dramatically increase the number of international students attending school at UI.

IOWA CITY — The snow, they like. The sometimes bitterly cold winter temperatures, not so much.
Five students from Iraq finished their first semester at the University of Iowa this fall, as part of the Iraqi Education Initiative, a program in which a handful of colleges and universities around the country are participating.
