The Asian Correspondent, an on-line newspaper, listed The University of Iowa as one of the “Top ten international universities in the US” in an article posted April 1, 2010.

Listed along with universities like Purdue, Columbia and NYU, the article notes that of the UI’s 30,000 students, eight percent are international students from 104 countries, making for a wide array of students.

Throughout her life, Anne Wallis has dreamt of India. The assistant professor of epidemiology has spent her free time drowning in Indian novels and marveling at its rich religious, cultural, and linguistic history.

“Sometimes you can’t explain why you’re interested in one place, except to say that you’re drawn to it,” she says.

You may not know her, but Joan Kjaer likely wants to know you.

The Iowa City resident is curious about others.

“I’ve just always, always been interested in meeting people,” said Kjaer, who has a warm, motherly air about her. “I’m just always interested in people and their stories. I just like meeting new people. It happens very rarely that I don’t feel some connection with someone.”

Fabienne Bertrand said she remembers experiencing her first earthquake when she was 5 years old and living in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

“I saw the television coming,” Bertrand told a group of students at Willowwind School on Monday afternoon. “It’s so weak, guys. It lasted a couple of seconds.”

Can one person own a sound?

Benjamin Franzen and Kembrew McLeod ask that question in their new documentary, Copyright Criminals, which will première nationally tonight on “Independent Lens,” a PBS documentary series. The film will be shown on IPTV World at 8 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m., Wednesday. Iowa Public Television will also air it at 11 p.m. on Jan. 24.

In response to suffering the largest cut in state funding for higher education nationwide, UI officials are looking to bring in more out-of-state and international students than ever.

University officials are actively seeking applicants from beyond Iowa’s borders to cope with the massive cuts, UI Provost Wallace Loh told members of the Faculty Council on Tuesday.

International Programs is helping coordinate the University of Iowa’s response to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti Sunday. While the International Student & Scholar Services has contacted UI’s Haitian students and Caribbean student groups, other offices are helping to get out the message about how the UI community can help those in need.
