In Japan, Yume Hidaka’s baby nephew is awaiting a special omiyag — souvenir — a Hawkeye shirt.

Hidaka, 27, the University of Iowa’s newest Japanese Outreach Initiative coordinator, is experiencing Hawkeye culture for the first time but with a Japanese twist.

She mingled with around 20 UI students on Sept. 21 during ocha no ojika — Japanese tea hour — in which students come together to speak Japanese.

A new Japanese outreach program coordinated by University of Iowa International Programs aims to build understanding and knowledge of Japanese culture and language. The Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) is a program supported by the Laurasian Institution and the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership, which funds the position of a Japanese cultural ambassador for two years. Yume Hidaka, a Kagoshima native, serves in that role and is available to give programs and presentations on Japanese culture on the UI campus and in communities across Iowa now through July of 2012.

From the September 2010 Newsletter

The number of international students on campus this fall is at a record high thanks to IP’s recruitment efforts. Around 800 new international students are enrolled at the UI, making the total international student population roughly 2,800. That’s almost 9 percent of all students on campus.

The University of Iowa has seen a substantial increase over the last five years in the number of students studying abroad in the Middle East, mirroring a national trend.

Only five students traveled to that region five years ago; last year, the number ballooned to 55.

Four Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants (FLTAs) have arrived at the University of Iowa where they will spend the next year in International Programs teaching Turkish, Indonesian, Hindi and Arabic and serving as cultural ambassadors for their home countries. The teaching assistants will also take two courses a semester as non-degree students during their year in Iowa.
