The assessment trip featured in this video was part of a development partnership between the University of Iowa, Engineers Without Borders USA, Self-Help International and people living in Ghana. The hope is that sustainable development focused on water, sanitation and energy will occur over time in ways that enable improved community health and prosperity.

Why Portuguese?– A question that Geoffrey Hilsabeck didn’t always have a clear answer for when he started learning the language in 2008 while attending the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. With the support of a Fulbright fellowship grant, Hilsabeck just finished a year studying Portuguese poetry and teaching a class in U.S. history and culture at the University of Lisbon.

The UI Center for Human Rights (UICHR) sponsors the annual Burns H. Weston International Human Rights Essay Prize and is currently accepting submissions. The 2010 deadline for submissions is Feb. 1, 2010.

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded University of Iowa International Programs two grants that will help expand on- and off-campus learning opportunities in South Asian studies for undergraduates and will create on-campus and study abroad courses in East Africa.

Members of the community and local elementary school students had opportunities to learn more about Japanese culture and language thanks to two events spearheaded by University of Iowa International Programs, under the leadership of Buffy Quintero, International Program Outreach Coordinator.

The University of Iowa awards numerous merit-based scholarships and need-based grants to encourage and support student participation in study abroad programs. Awards like the Ann Morse Study Abroad Scholarships and the Bedell World Citizenship Fund Experience Asia Scholarship, both created in 2007 from a generous bequest and a generous gift to the UI Foundation, help make study abroad possible for individual students. During FY09 the Office for Study Abroad awarded 630 scholarships and grants, totaling more than $850,000, to UI students studying abroad.
