More University of Iowa students will be saying “ni hao” as the Confucius Institute continues to grow in popularity. Membership and participation in the institute has skyrocketed since its inception eight years ago.
A group of educational leaders from various Japanese universities is visiting the University of Iowa to discuss Iowa’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiative and garner strategies and tactics to develop a STEM program in Japan.
UI alumna Jacqueline Klein, who received her Ph.D. from the College of Education in 2007, left a job as director of academic advising and learning development at NYU’s College of Nursing in New York to be part of the new endeavor. She is now assistant dean of academic and global affairs at NYU Shanghai.
When Katrina Korb uses a PowerPoint presentation in her University of Jos classroom, she brings her own projector and a small generator. This is just one of the differences between teaching at a U.S. institution and teaching in Nigeria. “The Nigerian university system faces many challenges, some of which are based on the lack of infrastructure that Nigeria faces as a whole,” Korb says. “One key example is irregular electricity.”

When Leslie Santos was working on her master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling at the University of Puerto Rico, many of the articles and books she read were written by University of Iowa professors Dennis R. Maki and Vilia Tarvydas.
“They are the top in the field of rehabilitation counseling,” Santos says.
So when she had an opportunity to move to Iowa to pursue her doctorate, she couldn’t pass up the opportunity to study under Maki and Tarvydas.
Marina Kostina (BA ’95/MA ’97/PhD ’11) is changing the way teachers and students interact online. She is also expanding the global reach of higher education through her work in distance learning.
Kostina, who says she came to the United States from Russia 20 years ago with “just a bag in my hand and a dream in my heart,” is now a best-selling author on Amazon and has created her own thriving business, Wired @ Heart, which teaches instructors to build effective online courses.
Frances Barnes recalls the profound culture shock she experienced when she first arrived in Iowa three years ago.
“I had never been to the Midwest before and wasn’t prepared for how different everything was,” says the 33-year-old College of Education Rehabilitation and Counselor Education doctoral student from North Carolina. “And I mean everything—the weather, the landscape, the culture, and not seeing as many people who looked like me.”
Stephanie Smith won’t be eligible to vote for five years, but a recent experience hosted by the University of Iowa College of Education left her eager to fill out a ballot.
“Instead of letting other people choose the person who is going to be our leader, I can have a say in it,” she says with a smile.

The University of Iowa College of Education may soon offer a shorter, three-week program to education majors who would like to fulfill their student-teaching requirement abroad.
Margaret Crocco, the dean of the education school, said the standard study-abroad program offered to education majors is seven or eight weeks long — roughly half of the 15-week student-teaching period required. She has recently looked into creating a shorter program because the eight-week commitment is a long period of time and quite costly.
European policy leaders have been wrestling for months with how to handle Greece’s unwieldy debt. But that problem isn’t just a problem for those on the other side of the Atlantic to solve.
“That’s not a Greek problem. It’s everybody’s problem. It affects our economy as well,” said Greg Hamot, a professor in the University of Iowa College of Education on Tuesday.
That’s just one example of why Hamot is urging Iowa educators to broaden their curricula to include more content from around the world.
For the second straight year, the University of Iowa’s International Programs and The Stanley Foundation are partnering to prepare teachers across the state of Iowa to infuse global perspectives into their classrooms.
The Global Education Summer Institute for Teachers, a professional development opportunity for educators, will be hosted by UI International Programs Monday, June 11 through Wednesday, June 13, bringing 34 middle, junior, and high school teachers from Iowa’s four congressional districts to the UI campus for three days of training, guest speakers, group activities, and workshops.
